Parents:
James Patrick Joseph Kelly and Harriet Curran were Gene’s parent. They married in 1906. His father was Canadian-born in Peterborough Canada in 1875 and loved sports which are where Gene got his love for sports and got some of his dance styles from. His mother, who is native to Pittsburgh, was his main influence in dance since she enrolled him and loved the theater.
First Marriage:
Gene's first wife was Betsy Blair, she was born December 11, 1923. started dancing when she was eight years old, which led her into modeling and branched her career to acting where she met Gene Kelly in 1940. She later married Gene in September of 1941 when she was 17. Later they had a daughter named Kerry, who was born October of 1942. Sadly after 16 years of marriage Gene divorced Betsy in 1957 after going their separate ways.
Second Marriage:
In 1960, Kelly married for his second time to his choreographic assistant Jeanne Coyne. Jeannie was born February 28, 1923. They first met when Gene was working at his family owned dance studio in Johnstown, Pennsylvania and were always good friends since then and when Jeannie moved to California for a dancing career they reunited still being good friends but when Gene divorced Betsy fate took over and they became more then friends. They married in 1960 in August. Later, they had their first child together, a baby boy; Timothy, who was born March of 1962. Then after a couple of years they had another child, this time a little girl named Bridget, who was born in 1964. After the two kids Jeannie decided to be a stay at home mom and therefore quite her job. Jeanne died in 1973 from leukemia.
Third Marriage:
After 12 years of mourning his late wife Jeannie, he met Patricia Ward in 1985 while making a documentary. After being together for 5 years Gene decided to ask her to be his wife. They were married in 1990. Tragedy struck when Gene started having strokes in 1994-95 and later died in his sleep on February, 2 1996.
Children:
Eldest daughter Kerry Kelly was born in 1942, October 16. Into a family who loved the arts, mother Betsy Blair; actress and father Gene Kelly; actor, dancer, and more. Born with natural talent Kerry loved to sing with her dad but even more she loved the more educational side of him, the one where at night they would pick a topic to read and research. That is probably where she got her interest in being a child psychologist and set off to the University of Michigan Medical School, and received her PhD. Later got married to Jack Novick, who is also a child psychologist. They have written countless number of books together including; Emotional Muscle: Strong Parents, Strong Children, and Fearful Symmetry: The Development and Treatment of Sadomasochism. They also lecture parents, teachers and medical practitioners at universities and training centers throughout the world.
Timothy Kelly is Gene’s second child but first son and first child of second marriage to Patricia Ward. He was born March of 1962. He is a mini version of Kelly with the same characteristics; “Our shirt, sleeve, neck, shoulder size, everything is the same. It’s amazing.” (People Magazine, 1984).Tim went to the University of Southern California’s Film School. He also is the type of guy who doesn't really like the whole fame and fortune life not to say he doesn't love the family he was born into but he is the kind of man that rather do thing and get things on his own merit which also explain why there isn't too much on him.
Last but not least Gene’s third child, his little girl Bridget. Born two years after her big brother; Timothy in 1964. Bridget is probably the one that fills her father’s shoes the most since she is in the theater business herself being a costume designer. She was so passionate about it she attended the American College in Paris for costume design. Bridget is not only passionate but also excellent at her job since she has done costume design for The Mambo Kings (1992), Dennis the Menace (1993) and Airheads (1996).
