Gene Kelly was one of the most amazing directors of his time. He was always more than just a director since he was an actor, singer, producer, dancer and choreographer. In Gene’s lifetime he directed 11 movies all of them being musicals that way he could choreograph them with his unique style of dance. His style wasn’t any particular style "In the 1930's, when I started, Martha Graham was the only dancer doing anything modern, but she did it all to classical music. I couldn't see myself doing 'Swan Lake' every night, and I wanted to develop a truly American style. The only dancer in the movies at that time with any success was Fred Astaire, but he did very small, elegant steps in a top hat, white tie and tails. I was too big physically for that kind of dancing and I looked better in a sweatshirt and loafers anyway. It wasn't elegant, but it was me."(Kelly) with that being said Gene did create an American style with a mixture of ballet and tap with a more athletic appeal to it. This all came from his influences mainly being sports that he played such as gymnastics. Gene also had a rare style of directing with mass movements and offbeat camera angles to tell his stories with few spoken words. The most words that were spoken in his movies were through song and body language.
